Every Sunday my husband’s family ‘just stopped by…

This Sunday the door opened without a knock. ‘Hope you made plenty!’ my father-
in-law called, already taking off his coat.

My husband whispered the same thing he always did. Just let it go. It’s family.’

I didn’t sigh. I didn’t water down the soup. I walked to the linen closet, and behind
the shelf my husband never touched, I found the stack of cards, and underneath a
thick manila folder that had been hidden there for nearly three years.

I stared at it for a second.

Then I carried it into the kitchen.

My husband’s family was already settling around the table.
