On the 5th Anniversary of My Husband’s Death, I Found a Black Bag on His Grave—Then I Opened It

I stared at it, confused.
Paul and I had never had children.

The rabbit was old, its white fur turning gray around the ears. One of its black button eyes was missing, and a thin red ribbon was tied around its neck.
I knew that rabbit.

I had seen it once before, years ago, in a photograph Paul had shown me shortly after we married. It belonged to a little girl he had known when he was younger. He had told me she was the daughter of a close friend.

I had never asked much about her.

Now, sitting beside my husband’s grave, I couldn’t stop staring at the rabbit.
