Beside the projector, Richard rose.
“Please sit down. We have several matters to address.”
Derek sat heavily.
“If this is about the cemetery, you’re seriously overreacting.”
Richard displayed unauthorized consulting payments, altered approvals, and invoices for services never provided.
Color gradually left Derek’s face.
“What is this?”
“Evidence,” Richard answered.
Vanessa leaned toward me.
“Dad, you don’t understand how business works anymore.”
I met her eyes.
“I understand that your husband received $416,000 in questionable payments from my company.”
“That’s ridiculous!” Derek shouted.
Richard laid another paper before him.
“Your access was suspended Tuesday.
The board has approved termination for cause, subject to final legal review.
The company is pursuing recovery of the funds.”
Derek jumped up.
“You can’t fire me! I’m family!”
“Family,” I repeated quietly. “That’s what I thought.”
Next, Richard projected the message about sending me into permanent care. Vanessa started sobbing.
“Daddy, we were worried about you.”
“Were you worried when you drove away?”
Her hand went to her mouth.
“Were you worried when you told me not to wait?”
She offered no reply.
I moved my phone across the tabletop, their messages visible on its screen.
“Those were your exact words.”
Derek gestured accusingly toward me.
“You’re going to destroy your daughter’s life over one argument?”
“No,” I replied. “I’m protecting what Eleanor and I spent our lives building.”
Richard outlined the independent physician’s findings: I retained full capacity to manage my affairs.
Their belief that they could assume control had no legal foundation.
My will and trust had been reviewed. Vanessa’s inheritance was uncertain; future gifts were solely my choice.
Then I addressed Derek directly.
“Your company apartment, Derek, was provided as part of your employment. The lease is ending according to its terms.”
Vanessa stared in alarm.
“But that’s our home!”
“Then perhaps you should understand what it feels like to be left without somewhere to go.”
Derek reached aggressively for the papers, but Richard gathered them before he could take them.
“Our attorneys are forwarding the evidence to the appropriate authorities.
Any criminal charges will be their decision.”
Derek finally fell speechless.
Six months later, insurance and settlement proceeds recovered much of the money.
Unemployed Derek faced a continuing fraud investigation.
Vanessa rented a modest apartment.
We spoke sometimes, but I stopped funding her lifestyle. She apologized; I listened.
Forgiveness wasn’t surrender.
I purchased a more modest house beside Eleanor’s beloved lake and created a scholarship bearing her name for students who had lost a parent.
Every Sunday, I returned to her grave.
One spring morning, I laid fresh white roses at her headstone.
“You were right, sweetheart,” I whispered.
A gentle breeze stirred the surrounding branches.
I thought back to that dreadful afternoon, the deserted parking area, and the messages that had hurt so much.
Four days after leaving me, they learned I’d called someone who could help me reclaim my life, not rescue a helpless old man.
I brushed Eleanor’s name with my fingers, then headed for my own vehicle.
