Jessica whirled toward him.
“You told me your father refused to help!”
Andrew stayed mute. Patricia appeared bewildered.
“What’s going on?”
“I helped him,” I answered. “And he abandoned me afterward.”
Rebecca explained that collecting such an old debt depended on limitation rules and whether the agreement remained enforceable.
I wasn’t seeking payment. I wanted the record set straight.
Andrew bowed his head, showing genuine shame for the first time. Jessica erupted.
“This changes nothing! You have millions! Give us what we’re owed!”
I rose.
“You’re owed nothing from the sale.”
She jabbed a finger toward me.
“You’ll never see your grandchildren!”
Once, those words would have shattered me.
Now I replied calmly, “I’m sorry they have been kept from me.
But I won’t purchase a relationship with them.”
Patricia snatched up her purse.
“You’re a heartless old man!”
“No,” I replied. “I’m a father who finally understands the difference between love and surrender.”
Andrew suddenly yelled.
“You’ve always cared more about that stupid company than me!”
I crossed to the mantel and lifted Margaret’s photograph.
“Your mother spent her final weeks asking whether you’d come.”
His fury drained away.
“Don’t.”
“She kept your childhood photographs beside her bed.”
“Dad, stop.”
“And every evening, she asked me to check the mailbox.”
His eyes glistened. I set her picture back down.
“You never came.”
Andrew sank into a chair. Jessica tried to haul him up.
“Come on. He’s manipulating you.”
He shook off her hand.
“Leave me alone.”
For an instant I recognized the scared child who once depended on me.
Yet compassion couldn’t excuse what he’d done.
“Andrew, you’re welcome to contact me respectfully.
But you cannot move into my home, demand my money, or threaten me through your children.”
Jessica laughed harshly.
“Then we’re done.”
She marched out, with Patricia close behind.
Andrew stayed until he finally murmured:
“I’m sorry, Dad.”
I met his eyes.
“I hope one day you’ll understand what you’re apologizing for.”
He departed without another argument.
Three months afterward, my foundation awarded its first twenty technical scholarships.
I wore Margaret’s favorite blue tie to the ceremony.
Seeing those students receive their awards gave me a joy no bank balance could provide.
Andrew and Jessica separated as their finances deteriorated.
The larger house they had imagined was no longer possible, and Andrew took an ordinary sales job.
