Mark scoffed.
“There’s nothing to explain. My wife is pregnant. I had a vasectomy. That means—”
“Stop.”
The word came from Dr. Bennett so sharply that the entire room went silent.
Mark’s mouth closed.
Dr. Bennett continued.
“You said the vasectomy was two months ago?”
“Yes.”
“And you said you believed it made pregnancy impossible immediately?”
“Yes.”
“Did you complete the post-vasectomy semen analysis?”
Mark hesitated.
“No.”
Dr. Bennett looked at him for several seconds.
“That is important.”
Mark’s expression hardened.
“It doesn’t explain how she’s pregnant.”
“No,” Dr. Bennett replied. “It doesn’t.”
She looked at me.
“Emily, based on the measurements I’m seeing here, you are farther along than your husband’s procedure date.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Dr. Bennett rotated the monitor toward me.
“The pregnancy appears to be approximately eleven weeks and several days.”
Mark’s face went completely blank.
Ashley slowly unfolded her arms.
“That can’t be right,” she whispered.

“Yes,” Dr. Bennett replied.
“And if she’s eleven weeks…”
“Then conception occurred before the procedure.”
Ashley went pale.
Mark stared at me.

I whispered, “I told you.”
He didn’t answer.
“You didn’t listen,” I continued.
“I told you the procedure wasn’t immediately effective. I told you the doctor said you needed testing. I told you I never cheated.”

I laughed bitterly.
“Because I didn’t know.”

I stared at the wall.

Maybe not that I was pregnant.

“What?”
“Your husband filed those divorce papers very quickly.”
“Yes.”
“Too quickly.”
