“Because I’m very happy to finally meet you.”
He stared at her.
“They told me you were sick.”
Claire swallowed.
“I was very sick after you were born.”
He looked down.
“They said you couldn’t take care of me.”
She leaned forward but didn’t touch him.
“I never chose to give you away.”
Elias didn’t call her Mom.
Not that day.
Not the next visit either.
For months, he called her Claire.
Sometimes he was curious.
Sometimes angry.
Sometimes he refused to speak.
She kept showing up anyway.
Same day.
Same time.
Eventually he stopped asking whether she would come back.
He simply expected her to.
Then, months later, while leaving one of their visits, Elias forgot himself.

Claire froze.

The administrator who processed the false guardianship documents was investigated separately.
Julian continued insisting that Elias had received better care than Claire could have provided.
He called his decisions practical.
But there was nothing practical about telling a mother her living child was dead.
DNA testing legally established Julian as Milo’s father.
I pursued child support and sole physical custody through attorneys.
I never saw Julian alone again.
The last time I saw him was outside a courthouse.
He noticed Milo in my arms.
For several seconds, he stared at him.
Then he looked away.
I didn’t.
I wanted him to see my son.
Not because Milo needed Julian’s approval.
Because he didn’t.
I wanted Julian to understand that Milo existed whether the Sterling family considered him convenient or not.

Almost a year later, Claire invited Milo and me to Elias’s birthday.

“That was Julian’s failure,” I said. “Not yours. Not Milo’s.”

“So nothing was wrong with me?”
“Nothing that made you less deserving of a family.”
He considered that.
Then smiled.
“I like that answer.”
He ran back toward Leo.
Claire sat beside me.
We watched the boys for a while.
Then she said, “Julian made one huge mistake.”
“What?”
“He thought you and I would hate each other.”
She was right.
He expected the wife to attack the other woman.
He expected me to hide from Claire.
As long as we blamed each other, neither of us would compare what he had told us.
Instead, she came to my apartment carrying a folder.
I believed her.
