I sent it to Nora.
Her reply came minutes later: the lien was dead, the lawsuit was frivolous, and she was filing for emergency expedited eviction based on harassment and fraud.
Part 5. The Fake Heart Attack
When the expedited order came through, I entered the kitchen and dropped it beside Gerald’s plate.
“You have two hours to pack. The sheriff arrives at noon.”
Gerald panicked and looked to Daniel.
“Son, you aren’t going to let her do this.”
Before Daniel could answer, Marlene dropped to the floor, clutching her chest and screaming that the stress was killing her.
Daniel grabbed his phone to call 911.
I told him to put it down.
I had worked fourteen years in emergency medicine. I knew what a heart attack looked like. I also knew what bad acting looked like.
I checked Marlene’s pulse. It was strong, regular, and normal. Her skin was warm and dry. Her lips were pink. There was no sign of cardiac distress.
Then I told her exactly what would happen if she forced an ambulance call: paramedics would document that she was medically stable and that the episode appeared staged to delay a legal eviction.
Her fake gasping stopped immediately.
Daniel saw it.
For the first time, he understood that his parents had lied about the room, lied about the roof, and were now using his fear to keep control.
“I froze,” he whispered.
“Yes,” I said. “And Emma paid for it.”
That was the moment Daniel finally stepped forward.
He told his parents they had one hour to pack. If they were not gone by noon, he would help the sheriff carry their bags to the curb.
When Gerald tried to intimidate him, Daniel did not step back.
“If you contact Emma without permission or spread another lie about my wife,” he said, “we will bury you in court.”
The word “we” changed the room.
I did not forgive him in that moment.
But for the first time, he stood between his parents and the hallway leading to our daughter’s room.
Part 6. Olivia’s Choice
Gerald and Marlene left without saying goodbye.
Olivia was the last to go.
She stood near the front door in her thin jacket, then looked up at Emma on the stairs.
“I really am sorry,” she said.
Emma nodded.
Then Olivia handed her a folded paper through the banister.
It was a copy of her school registration form. She had listed her Aunt Hannah’s address in New Hampshire as her permanent residence—not our house.
CPS would see it on Monday.
