I Thought I Was Simply Paying for My Son’s Wedding — Then I Found Furniture, Moving, and Renovation Bills Connected to My Own Home

The wedding was scheduled for 4 p.m.

At 10 a.m., I received an email from the venue.

Wedding canceled.

No explanation.

Just two words.

I expected to feel victorious.

I didn’t.

I felt tired.

I went downstairs.

Maya was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked at me.

“So?”

“They canceled.”

She nodded.

“How do you feel?”

I thought about it.

“Relieved.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Then my phone rang.

It was Susan.

I answered.

“Hello?”

She was crying.

“Nancy.”

“What happened?”

“Jessica left.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

“She left me with the hotel bill.”
