I Heard My Newborn Screaming From the Bathroom—Then I Saw My Husband’s Stepmother Holding the Toilet Lid Down

I heard my newborn screaming from the downstairs bathroom and ran toward the sound. When I pulled the door open, my husband’s stepmother had one hand on the toilet lid—and my baby was inside. I yanked it open, and my husband rushed in, lifting our crying daughter into his arms. But instead of asking whether the baby was okay, his stepmother tried to leave. Then, when I demanded we call an ambulance, she suddenly said, “No.” Her fear didn’t look like concern. It looked like panic at being caught. Hours later, after doctors confirmed our baby was stable, my husband’s phone rang at 3:17 a.m. His stepmother was on the line. Her voice shook as she said, “She wasn’t supposed to be here.” Then the call went dead.
