Ten minutes before I was supposed to walk down the aisle, my fiancé’s 83-year-old grandmother squeezed my hand and whispered, “If he says those four words, don’t believe him.” Before she could explain, my future mother-in-law appeared and quickly led her away. Minutes later, I looked outside and saw my fiancé Ethan arguing with a crying woman I had never met. “She deserves to know,” the woman told him before noticing me and whispering, “I’m sorry.” Ethan followed me back to the bridal room, took my hands, and tried to calm me down. My wedding dress was already on, my hair had been carefully pinned into place, and my mother had cried twice before anyone had even started the ceremony.
Someone had just handed me my bouquet when Ethan’s grandmother appeared in the small bridal room behind the chapel.
Grandma Rose was eighty-three, tiny, observant, and normally one of the calmest people in Ethan’s family.
But that afternoon, she looked genuinely frightened.
“Claire.”
I smiled when I saw her.
“You’re supposed to be sitting with everyone else.”
She didn’t smile back.
Instead, she stepped forward and wrapped her cold fingers tightly around my hand.
“If he says those four words,” she whispered, “don’t believe him.”
I stared at her.
“What four words?”
Rose opened her mouth to answer, but before she could speak, my future mother-in-law appeared in the doorway.
“Mom? What are you doing back here?”
Grandma Rose immediately stopped talking.
“I was speaking with Claire.”
Patricia walked toward her.
“Everyone is waiting.”
She gently but firmly took Rose by the arm.
Rose resisted for a second.
“Patricia.”
“Mom.”
Something passed silently between them.
A warning.
As Patricia escorted her away, Grandma Rose looked over her shoulder at me.
She didn’t look confused.
She didn’t look forgetful.
She looked scared.
I remained there holding my bouquet, suddenly aware of how loudly my heart was beating.
A few minutes later, my bridesmaid Jenna walked into the room.
“You okay?”
“Fine.”
She studied my face.
“You look like you just saw a ghost.”
“I’m about to get married.”
“That normally produces happier-looking ghosts.”
I nearly told her what Grandma Rose had said, but the photographer called Jenna away.
Left alone again, I walked toward the window.
Ethan was supposed to be inside the chapel waiting near the altar.
He wasn’t.
He was standing outside near a side entrance.
And he wasn’t alone.
A woman I had never seen before stood beside him.
She appeared to be around our age, maybe thirty-five. She had dark hair, wore a black dress, and despite the chilly weather, had no coat.
She was crying.
I quietly moved closer to the open side door.
“You can’t do this,” the woman said.
Ethan glanced nervously toward the chapel.
“I told you I’ll handle it.”
“When?”
“Not now.”
“You promised me before today.”
“I know what I promised.”
She grabbed his arm.
“She deserves to know.”
My stomach tightened.
Deserves to know what?
Ethan pulled away.
“This isn’t the time.”
“This is exactly the time.”
I stepped outside.
The moment Ethan saw me, his entire expression changed.
The woman immediately released his arm.
“Who is she?” I asked.
Ethan took a cautious step toward me.
“I’ll explain later.”
“You’re marrying me in ten minutes. Explain now.”
The woman wiped her tears and looked directly at me.
For a second, I thought she was going to tell me herself.
Then Ethan stepped between us.
“Please, Claire. Go back inside.”
“Ethan.”
“Please.”
Someone called my name from the chapel.
The ceremony was almost ready to begin.
Against every instinct screaming inside me, I returned to the bridal room.
I told myself there had to be an explanation.
I could get through the ceremony.
Thirty minutes.
We could talk afterward.
A few minutes later, the door opened.
Ethan walked in.
“What are you doing?” I asked. “We’re not even supposed to see each other before the ceremony.”
“I know.”
He shut the door.
I didn’t allow him to say anything else.
“Who was she?”
He dragged both hands over his face.
“I can explain.”
“Then do it.”
He approached me and took both of my hands.
Then he looked directly into my eyes.
“She is my sister.”
My entire body went cold.
Four words.
I immediately remembered Grandma Rose.

“It’s time!”
Ethan squeezed my hands.
“Claire?”
I pulled away.
“No.”
His face tightened.
“What?”
“No.”
“We can discuss this afterward.”

“You don’t mean that.”
I stared directly at him.
“Your grandmother warned me.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
“She told me that if you said those four words, I shouldn’t believe you.”
The color disappeared from his face.
That reaction told me everything.
“She isn’t your sister.”
Ethan glanced toward the door.
Then back at me.
“Claire, there are things you don’t understand.”
“Then explain them.”
He said nothing.
