“I panicked.”
“Ten minutes before our vows.”
“I know.”
“You were about to promise honesty in front of eighty people ten minutes after lying directly to my face.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
I wanted to scream.
Instead, something inside me became strangely calm.
That frightened Ethan more.
“You people keep telling me you know,” I said. “So what exactly happens now?”
Patricia answered immediately.
“We get through today.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“You’re understandably emotional. But none of this has anything to do with your relationship with Ethan.”
“You hid letters from your dead son’s fiancée.”
“That happened seven years ago.”
“And you encouraged Ethan not to tell me about it now.”
“I encouraged my son not to destroy his future over something he can no longer change.”
Grandma Rose whispered, “There it is.”
Patricia ignored her.
“Claire, everyone is waiting. You love Ethan.”
“I do.”
“Then don’t make this bigger than it needs to be.”
Something inside me finally settled.
I looked at Ethan.
“Do you agree with your mother?”
“No.”
“Then why am I learning the truth from everyone except you?”
He had no answer.
I left the room.
But I didn’t walk toward the altar.
I found Father James standing near the chapel entrance.
He took one look at my face.
“Oh.”
“There isn’t going to be a wedding today.”

I entered the chapel myself.
