I Thought Tough Love Was the Right Choice… Until I Learned Why My Daughter Was Really Drinking That Night

“Kayla…”
“No.” Her voice was quiet. “You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.”
I nodded.
“You’re right.”
She crossed her arms. She was thinner than the picture. Smaller somehow.
“I’m not going back with you.”
“I know.”
“And I’m not apologizing.”

“You shouldn’t.”
That made her eyes flicker.
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“I came to say I’m sorry.”
Her laugh was hollow.
“Eight months late.”
“Yes,” I said. “Eight months late.”

Her eyes filled, but she refused to let the tears fall.
“I begged you,” she whispered. “I was on the porch. I kept saying I was scared.”
“I heard you.”
“Then why didn’t you open the door?”
There it was.
The question I had no answer for.
Because no answer would ever be enough.
