Then he said something I never expected.
“Renata left me.”
I felt nothing.
Not satisfaction.
Not happiness.
Nothing.
“Okay.”
His face changed.
“That’s all you have to say?”
“What do you want me to say?”
“I thought you would understand.”
I stared at him.
“Understand what?”
“She only liked the lifestyle.”
I almost laughed.
The irony was unbelievable.
“The woman you spent our money on left because she wanted money?”
He looked away.
I shook my head.
“Darryl, you still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“The problem was never Renata.”
He looked back at me.
“The problem was you.”
That evening, Mr. Wallace called.
“Rebecca.”
“Yes?”
“The investigation has started.”
I sat down.
“And?”
“There is more.”
I closed my eyes.
“More?”
“Yes.”
He paused.
“The company discovered Darryl wasn’t only using company funds.”
My heart sank.
“What else?”
“He used your personal information.”
“For what?”
“He applied for loans.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Loans connected to the property.”
I stood up.
“How much?”
A long pause.
“Almost $300,000.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
The man I had shared my life with wasn’t just cheating.
He wasn’t just lying.
He was trying to put my father’s legacy at risk.
My father’s land.
My home.
My future.
Everything.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the old oak tree stood exactly where it had stood for decades.
My father planted that tree when I was born.
He always told me:
“A tree grows slowly, Rebecca. But once the roots are deep, storms have a harder time moving it.”
I finally understood what he meant.
Darryl thought he could uproot me.
But he didn’t know my roots.
They went deeper than he ever imagined.
I turned back to my phone.
“Mr. Wallace?”
“Yes?”
“Do whatever we need to do.”
“Are you sure?”
I looked around my house.
The house my father left me.
The house I protected.
The house Darryl thought he could steal.
“Yes.”
My voice was calm.
“Because now this isn’t about my marriage anymore.”
A pause.
“It’s about justice.”
The next morning, Darryl received a letter.
Not from me.
Not from a bank.
Not from his company.
From the court.
And when he opened it, he finally realized something.
The woman he thought he could control for nine years…
was the same woman who was now standing between him and everything he wanted.
But what Darryl didn’t know…
was that the court case would reveal a secret even he had forgotten.
A secret from the day my father created the trust.
A secret that would change everything.
