Nathaniel shifted slightly beside me, but I gave no reaction.
Brandon raised his glass.
“Hannah… the girl who once tripped over her own shoelace and knocked over the cake table at my graduation.”
“Don’t worry.”
“We’re not expecting you to make a scene this time.”
“Though I have to admit… that outfit earlier today was very… grunge chic.”
A few uneasy laughs spread across the room. For years my family had relied on humiliating me whenever they wanted attention, and Brandon clearly believed tonight would be no different.
Instead, Nathaniel calmly stood.
The room fell silent before he spoke a single word.
“Actually…”
“If anyone owes someone a toast… it’s me.”
Brandon’s smile disappeared.
Nathaniel looked at me with quiet pride before turning toward the guests.
“To Hannah.”
“Who stayed strong while others mocked her.”
“Who carried herself with dignity when her own family tried to humiliate her.”
“And who has more class in one ruined dress than some people have in their entire overpriced suits.”
Aunt Carol nearly choked on her drink as every guest looked from Nathaniel to my family.
He slowly lifted his glass.
“To my wife.”
“And to knowing your worth… even when the people closest to you forget it.”
He gently touched his glass against mine.
The sound echoed through the silent dining room.
Only then did Brandon finally understand what everyone else had already realized.
“Wait…”
“Wife?”
Nathaniel answered without raising his voice.
“Yes.”
“I’m Hannah’s husband.”
“I wanted to meet her family properly.”
“But it seems I already have.”
He calmly sat back down and continued his dinner as though nothing unusual had happened. Across the room my mother dropped her fork onto the plate, Brandon stood frozen with the microphone hanging uselessly at his side, and Danielle whispered furiously into his ear.
