Wade smiled gently and reached out with one scarred finger, letting the baby wrap his tiny hand around it.
“You take good care of your mama, little bear.”
“I think she’s going to do the same for you.”
After they walked through the hospital doors, the nursery felt strangely quiet. I watched Wade remove his volunteer badge, preparing to head home, before another infant began crying from across the room. He looked toward the sound, smiled softly, and turned back without hesitation.
“Looks like somebody else needs a cuddle.”
That was the day I finally understood something I had completely misjudged when I first met him. The strongest hands in our NICU weren’t the gentlest because they lacked strength. They were gentle because they understood exactly how precious a fragile life could be.
