Part 3: The Wedding Became a Crime Scene
I walked toward the ceremony alone, my wedding dress flowing behind me as guests stood and smiled, believing the celebration was finally beginning. They had no idea that the detectives following a few steps behind me were there to make arrests rather than witness a marriage. Ethan emerged from the house moments later looking pale and shaken, while Vivian hurried after him, whispering frantic instructions that no one around her seemed willing to obey anymore.
The officiant leaned toward me before the ceremony could begin.
“Should I stop?”
I shook my head.
“No. Today deserves witnesses.”
He stepped back without another question, and I accepted the microphone that had been prepared for our wedding vows. Hundreds of guests watched silently, expecting a welcome speech or a sentimental story about how Ethan and I had met.
Instead, I looked directly at them and said, “There will be no wedding.”
A wave of confusion spread across the garden.
Ethan immediately walked toward me, forcing a smile that no longer looked convincing.
“Claire,” he whispered, “don’t do this publicly.”
I met his eyes without raising my voice.
“You planned to kill me privately. Public feels appropriate.”
The smile disappeared from his face.
Behind the ceremony platform stood a massive screen that had been arranged to display photographs from our childhoods during the reception. I nodded toward Daniel, who pressed a single button on the control panel.
The first recording began to play.
Across the garden, Ethan’s voice echoed through the speakers.
By autumn, I bury her.
No one moved.
The recording continued as Marcus calmly discussed altering the boat’s fuel system. Vivian laughed about how well widowhood would suit her son, and together they discussed my inheritance with the same casual confidence other families reserved for holiday travel plans. Every guest heard every word exactly as I had heard it the night before.
When the audio finally ended, silence settled over the estate. Some guests stared at Ethan in disbelief, while others slowly stepped away from Vivian as though simply standing beside her had become dangerous. The people who had arrived expecting champagne and wedding cake were now watching a criminal conspiracy unravel in real time.
