“Who are you?”
There was a pause.
Then the woman replied:
“I’m the reason your husband wanted you gone.”
The call ended.
I stood there in the hospital hallway…
Realizing the nightmare was far from over.
Because the magnets were never the real secret.
They were only the beginning.
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
The phone was still pressed against my ear.
The call had ended.
But that woman’s voice remained.
“I’m the reason your husband wanted you gone.”
Those words kept repeating in my mind.
Officer Lawson noticed my expression.
“Mrs. Carter?”
I looked at him.
“There was another call.”
His face immediately became serious.
“Who was it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did the person identify themselves?”
I shook my head.
“She said she knows why Eleanor gave my daughter the magnets.”
Officer Lawson looked toward Ethan.
“Did she mention Mr. Carter?”
I swallowed.
“She said… she’s the reason my husband wanted me gone.”
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
Ethan’s face lost all color.
“Natalie, don’t listen to whoever that was.”
I turned toward him slowly.
“Why?”
He looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
“Why are you so sure she is lying?”
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Because he knew.
He knew too much.
Officer Lawson stepped between us.
“Mr. Carter, I think it’s best you come with me.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No. You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
His eyes moved toward me.
“Natalie, there are things you don’t know.”
A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.
“Apparently, there are many things I don’t know.”
For years, I had believed my marriage was ordinary.
Not perfect.
No marriage is.
But real.
We had met when I was twenty-seven.
Ethan was funny, charming, and patient.
When our daughter Chloe was born, he cried harder than I did.
He held her tiny hand and promised her:
“Daddy will always protect you.”
I remembered that moment.
And standing there in the hospital, I wondered when that promise disappeared.
When did he stop being the man who protected her?
When did he become someone I needed protection from?
The police took Ethan to the station for questioning.
They didn’t arrest him.
Not yet.
But they wanted answers.
And I wanted them too.
Two hours later, I finally entered Chloe’s room.
She looked so small beneath the white hospital blanket.
There were wires attached to her.
Machines monitoring every heartbeat.
My little girl who loved cartoons, chocolate ice cream, and making drawings for everyone…
Had almost died because someone put thirty-six magnets in her body.
I sat beside her and held her hand.
Her eyes slowly opened.
“Mommy?”
“I’m here, sweetheart.”
She looked around nervously.
“Are the fish gone?”
I kissed her forehead.
“Yes. The little fish are gone.”
She relaxed.
Then she whispered:
“Is Daddy mad at me?”
My heart broke.
“No, baby. Why would Daddy be mad at you?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I didn’t listen.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
She looked toward the door.
The same way she had done before.
Like she was afraid someone was watching.
“Chloe, Mommy needs you to tell me the truth.”
She squeezed my fingers.
“The lady said I was helping Daddy.”
My entire body went numb.
“What lady?”
She started crying.
“The grandma.”
“Eleanor?”
She nodded.
“What did Grandma say?”
Chloe wiped her tears.
“She said Daddy was sad because Mommy wanted to take me away.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Take you away?”
She nodded.
“She said if Mommy went away, Daddy and I could be a happy family again.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Sweetheart… did Grandma put the magnets in your food?”
Chloe shook her head quickly.
“No.”
I waited.
She looked down.
“She said they were little fish eggs.”
My stomach turned.
“Where did she give them to you?”
Chloe pointed weakly toward her hospital bag.
“The cookies.”
I immediately looked at the bag.
The nurses had brought her belongings from home.
Officer Lawson was called back.
Inside the bag was a small plastic container.
A container that had been in our house.
Inside were homemade cookies.
Eleanor had brought them to dinner.
Officer Lawson sent them to be tested.
Then he looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, there’s something else.”
“What?”
He handed me a piece of paper.
It was a printed email.
From Ethan.
Sent three months earlier.
My hands trembled as I read it.
The message was short.
“I can’t do this anymore. I need a solution. I need Natalie out of our lives without losing Chloe.”
I looked up.
“Where did you get this?”
“We found it on a recovered account connected to Mr. Carter.”
My vision blurred.
Three months.
He had been planning something for three months.
Not a divorce.
Not a conversation.
A solution.
Like I was a problem to remove.
That night, after Chloe finally fell asleep, I sat alone in the hospital hallway.
My phone rang again.
The same unknown number.
This time, I answered immediately.
“Who are you?”
A long silence.
Then:
“My name is Vanessa.”
I stood up.
“Vanessa who?”
“Vanessa Reed.”
The name meant nothing.
But then she said:
“I was married to Ethan before you.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
“He never told you about me, did he?”
I couldn’t speak.
Because no.
He had never mentioned a Vanessa.
Not once.
“I was pregnant when I found out about Eleanor’s plan.”
“What plan?”
Her voice cracked.
“The same plan she is using against you.”
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me everything.”
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Ethan didn’t leave me because our marriage failed.”
“Then why?”
“Because his mother wanted him to marry someone else.”
I felt sick.
“Someone else?”
“Someone from a wealthy family. Someone who could help their business.”
I looked through the hospital window at my daughter.
“Why me?”
“Because you were never supposed to be permanent.”
My heart sank.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Ethan married you because his mother thought you were easy to control.”
I closed my eyes.
Every memory suddenly felt different.
The moments Eleanor criticized my cooking.
The times she questioned my parenting.
The way she always told Ethan:
“You deserve someone better.”
I had thought she was just cruel.
I didn’t realize she was calculating.
Vanessa continued.
“But something changed.”
