My Dad Locked Me Out at −12°F for Missing My 10 PM Curfew—Then a News Crew Showed Up at Our House

After a prolonged hospital shift during a blizzard, I discovered Dad had chained the front door. His excuse: “Curfew is 10. Rules are rules.” At -12°F, I slept in my car. On my way back, I’d rescued an elderly man from a snowbank. By morning, reporters stood outside our house as Mom, still in her robe, heard: “Is this where the nurse who slept in her car lives?”

It began when my hospital supervisor held me past my shift.

“You’re held, Kayla. Two of my night nurses are stuck on Highway 10, and a county plow just went over on its side near Foley. I need you till somebody gets here.”
