My husband forgot to hang up after telling me he was working late. I was about to end the call myself when I heard another woman laughing beside him.

“Of course I hate her. I barely touch her anymore. Just wait until I divorce her. Then I’ll marry you.”
A moment later, I heard them kiss.
I stood in our kitchen, staring at the phone while our newborn daughter slept in her bassinet. My husband had just admitted that he hated me, and he had no idea I’d heard every word.
My name is Nora, and Julian and I had been married for two years. We’d welcomed our daughter, Maya, only a few weeks earlier, and I was still on maternity leave.
Before Maya was born, I’d worked as a senior financial analyst. I was accustomed to long hours and demanding responsibilities, but nothing had prepared me for caring for a newborn almost entirely alone.
Julian had always been ambitious. He worked for a large corporate firm, and his position often required late meetings and occasional business trips.
At least, that was what he’d told me.
After Maya’s birth, his schedule became increasingly unpredictable. He left before breakfast, rarely came home for dinner, and complained whenever I asked whether he could help with the baby.
I’d convinced myself he was under pressure at work.
That afternoon, I’d called because I wanted to know whether I should prepare dinner for two.
“Probably not,” Julian snapped. “Can you stop checking up on me? I’m working.”
I swallowed my disappointment.
“Okay. Love you.”
He didn’t answer.
I set my phone beside Maya’s bottle and noticed that the call was still connected.
Then I heard the woman’s voice.
She sounded young and relaxed, as though she and Julian had been enjoying a private conversation before I interrupted.
“Does she always call you like that?” the woman asked.
Julian sighed.
“Constantly. She’s driving me insane with baby pictures and questions about when I’m coming home.”
The woman laughed.
“Then why are you still with her?”
His answer was immediate.
“Because leaving right after the baby was born would make me look terrible. Give me a little time.”
I pressed a hand against the kitchen counter.
“Do you even love her anymore?” the woman asked.
Julian laughed.
“Of course not. I can’t stand being around her.”
Then came the promise about divorcing me and marrying her.
I quietly ended the call.
For several minutes, I couldn’t move. Maya began fussing in her bassinet, and I forced myself to pick her up before she started crying.
As I held my daughter, I looked around the kitchen we’d decorated together.
Our wedding photograph stood on a nearby shelf. Julian had his arms wrapped around me, smiling as though there was nowhere else he’d rather be.
I wondered how long that smile had been a lie.
That evening, he came home carrying a small bouquet of grocery-store flowers.
“Hey, beautiful,” he said, kissing my forehead. “Missed my girls.”
I looked at the flowers, then at the man who’d told another woman he hated me only hours earlier.
“That’s sweet,” I replied.
He seemed satisfied.
Over the next six days, I said nothing about the call.
Instead, I watched.
Julian took his phone into the bathroom, changed his passcode, and began wearing expensive cologne to meetings that supposedly lasted until midnight.
I also started reviewing our financial records.
What I found made me realize that his affair wasn’t the only thing he’d been hiding.
Our second wedding anniversary was approaching, and I’d originally planned a quiet dinner for the three of us.
Instead, I called our parents and invited both families.
I prepared roast chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and pumpkin pie. I set the table carefully and welcomed everyone with a smile.
Julian seemed delighted by the attention.
After dinner, when everyone had finished eating, I stood and raised my glass.
“I’d like to make a toast to my husband.”
Julian looked up, smiling confidently.
I reached toward the small Bluetooth speaker I’d placed beside my plate.
For six days, he’d believed I knew nothing.

Twelve people sat around our dining table, waiting for me to finish my anniversary toast. Julian smiled from the head of the table, completely unaware that I had heard him tell another woman he hated me.
I looked at my husband, remembering the flowers he’d brought home after that phone call. For six days, he’d kissed my forehead and pretended we were a happy family while secretly planning to leave me and our newborn daughter.
“Julian,” I began, “you’ve spent months telling everyone how hard you work to support Maya and me.”
His mother, Evelyn, nodded approvingly.
“He’s always been such a dedicated husband,” she said.
I smiled politely.
“That’s exactly what I wanted to talk about.”
Julian shifted in his chair.
“Nora, honey, you don’t have to make a big speech.”
“But I do. Because I think everyone deserves to know how you really feel about our marriage.”
I picked up my phone and connected it to the small Bluetooth speaker beside my plate.
Then I pressed Play.
Julian’s voice filled the dining room.
“She’s driving me insane. Always sending pictures of the baby and asking when I’ll be home. I just want her to leave me alone.”
My mother slowly lowered her glass.
Evelyn stopped smiling.
The recording continued.
“Of course I hate her. I barely touch her anymore. Just wait until I divorce her. Then I’ll marry you.”
A woman’s laughter followed, along with the unmistakable sound of a kiss.
Nobody spoke.
Julian jumped to his feet, knocking his chair backward.
“Nora! Turn that off!”
I stopped the recording.
My father looked directly at him.
“Who was that woman?”
Julian’s face had turned pale.
“It’s not what it sounds like.”
“Then explain it,” my father replied.
Julian looked around the table, searching for someone willing to defend him.
“That recording could be fake. People can generate voices with artificial intelligence now.”
I opened the leather portfolio I’d placed on the sideboard.
“I’m glad you mentioned that.”
I removed the first folder and placed it in front of Evelyn.
“These are our phone records. They show thousands of messages exchanged between Julian and a woman named Chloe over the last six months.”
Evelyn opened the folder.
“Who’s Chloe?”
“His twenty-four-year-old junior associate.”
Julian reached for the papers.
“You had no right to go through my personal information!”
I pulled the folder away.
“The records came from an account I’m authorized to access.”
Then I placed another folder on the table.
“After hearing that phone call, I hired a licensed private investigator. These photographs show Julian and Chloe meeting at the Grand Hyatt downtown.”
My father examined the pictures.
Julian was clearly visible entering the hotel with a young blonde woman. Another photograph showed them leaving together several hours later.
My mother covered her mouth.
“Oh, Nora.”
I nodded.
“There’s more.”
I’d spent the previous week reviewing our joint accounts, and the hotel visits weren’t the only surprise. Thousands of dollars had disappeared from the emergency savings we’d built before Maya was born.
Some withdrawals matched the dates in the investigator’s report.
“You used our savings to pay for your affair,” I told Julian.
He shook his head.
“Those were business expenses.”
“Then why did the money come from our personal account?”
He had no answer.
Evelyn looked at her son with tears in her eyes.
“You told me Nora was struggling with the baby because you were working so hard.”
“I am working hard!”
“Apparently not every evening,” my father replied.
Julian turned toward me.
“You invited our families here just to humiliate me?”
“No. I invited them because you’ve spent months making me believe I was unreasonable for asking you to come home.”
He leaned across the table.
“We could have discussed this privately!”
“We could have,” I answered. “But you already discussed our marriage with Chloe.”
I took out the final folder.
It contained the documents my attorney had prepared after reviewing our finances and discussing my options.
