PART 3
Brennan’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“No.”
“Sir, with all due respect, you handed an unlimited card to a complete stranger. We have no idea what she’s doing.”
Brennan looked at the transaction again.
Something about the amount troubled him. It was too specific, too large for an ordinary doctor’s appointment, and too immediate to be a casual purchase.
“Find out which hospital processed it,” he ordered. “And get me the details of the transaction. Don’t contact the woman.”
Daniel nodded and hurried away.
Brennan returned to the boardroom, but he heard almost nothing during the next forty minutes.
Executives discussed quarterly earnings. Someone presented a pharmaceutical acquisition proposal. Another person asked him to approve a multimillion-dollar investment.
Brennan stared at the numbers on the screen.
For the first time in years, none of them mattered.
His phone vibrated again.
Transaction approved: $1,249.00 — Children’s medical equipment supplier.
His heart began beating faster.
Another notification arrived.
Transaction approved: $386.42 — Pharmacy.
Then another.
Transaction approved: $2,100.00 — Medical services.
Brennan pushed his chair backward so abruptly that everyone around the table fell silent.
“Mr. Ashford?” one executive asked.
“I need five minutes.”
He left without waiting for permission.
Inside his private office, he called Daniel.
“What have you found?”
“The first payment went to a hospital account. I’m trying to confirm the patient information through the proper channels.”
“Why is she spending thousands on medical equipment?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Brennan stared through the glass walls at the city below.
He had expected Grace to reveal something ugly about human nature.
He had expected greed, recklessness, perhaps an attempt to take advantage of his generosity.
Instead, she was spending his money as though someone else’s life depended on it.
And suddenly, he remembered the little girl sleeping against her mother’s chest.
Lily.
Six years old.
Tiny hands hidden inside oversized sleeves.
Had Brennan missed something obvious?
He called the hospital himself.
After several transfers, a patient financial services representative finally answered. Brennan explained that he was calling about a payment made with his card, but the representative could not disclose another person’s medical information without authorization.
“I understand,” he said, trying to keep his frustration under control. “I’m not asking you to violate anyone’s privacy. I simply need to know whether the transaction was processed correctly.”
“It was,” the representative replied. “The payment has been received.”
“Was it applied to an outstanding balance?”
There was a brief pause.
“Yes, sir. But I’m afraid that’s all I can confirm.”
Brennan thanked her and ended the call.
An outstanding balance.
He sat down slowly.
Perhaps Grace had been carrying a debt for months. Perhaps her daughter needed treatment. Perhaps the woman had been trying to save a child while the rest of the world walked past her.
For the first time since giving away his card, Brennan wondered whether his experiment had been cruel.
He had treated a mother’s desperation as an opportunity to test her character.
He had given her money, but he had never asked what had happened to her.
And he had never considered that she might already be fighting a battle far worse than anything he could imagine.
Then his phone rang.
It was Daniel.
“Sir, I’ve found something.”
“What?”
“The hospital transaction appears to be connected to an outstanding pediatric account. There are also payments for a medical device and prescriptions. I can’t confirm the patient’s identity through the transaction records alone, but the charges are legitimate.”
Brennan closed his eyes.
“Keep looking into the public details. Nothing invasive. And don’t interfere with her purchases.”
“Understood.”
After ending the call, Brennan stood by the window for several minutes.
Then another thought struck him.
He had given Grace twenty-four hours.
But what if twenty-four hours was all she needed to save someone?
What if he had unknowingly placed a lifeline in the hands of a woman who had been waiting for one?
He looked at the time.
Only an hour had passed.
And already, his carefully constructed beliefs were beginning to crack.
Across Boston, Grace Miller stood inside a hospital corridor with Lily’s small hand wrapped tightly around hers.
The little girl was awake now.
Her cheeks were pale, and her eyes looked too large for her tired face.
“Mommy,” Lily whispered, “are we in trouble?”
Grace immediately knelt beside her.
“No, sweetheart. Why would you think that?”
“Because you were crying last night.”
Grace swallowed the ache rising in her throat.
She had tried so hard to hide her tears from Lily.
She cried quietly in public bathrooms. She waited until her daughter fell asleep before allowing herself to break down. Whenever Lily asked why they couldn’t return to their apartment, Grace invented another explanation.
She had become an expert at turning heartbreak into bedtime stories.
But children noticed more than adults wanted to believe.
“Sometimes Mommy gets sad,” Grace said gently. “But that doesn’t mean we’re in trouble.”
Lily studied her face.
“Will we have a home again?”
Grace felt the question strike somewhere deep inside her.
She wanted to promise yes.
She wanted to tell Lily that they would return to a warm apartment with a little kitchen, a soft bed, and a window where the morning sunlight could reach them.
She wanted to tell her that the world was still a safe place.
But promises were dangerous when you had nothing left to guarantee them.
So she kissed Lily’s forehead.
“I’m going to do everything I can.”
Lily nodded, accepting the answer with the heartbreaking trust only a child could offer.
Then she glanced toward the hospital room.
“Will Mrs. Evelyn get better?”
Grace looked away.
There it was.
The reason for the first purchase.
Not a debt of her own.
Not a luxury.
Not even a desperate attempt to escape poverty.
Grace had used Brennan’s card to pay part of the medical expenses for an elderly woman who had once given her and Lily a place to sleep.
Mrs. Evelyn Parker.
Seventy-two years old.
A retired elementary school teacher who had spent nearly four decades helping children learn to read.
She had found Grace and Lily six months earlier, when Grace had been working two jobs and struggling to pay rent after her husband abandoned them.
Evelyn had lived in a small apartment in Dorchester. She had little money, but she had a spare room and a kitchen that always smelled of cinnamon.
When Grace lost her job after missing several shifts to care for Lily during a severe bout of influenza, Evelyn had refused to let them sleep in their car.
“Nobody should have to choose between buying groceries and keeping a roof over their child’s head,” she had told Grace.
For several weeks, Evelyn shared her home, her meals, and what little savings she had.
She never asked for repayment.
She never made Grace feel like a burden.
And when Grace finally found temporary work and began rebuilding her life, Evelyn insisted that she and Lily stay until they could afford somewhere permanent.
Then Evelyn collapsed one afternoon.
A medical emergency led to hospitalization, and the financial burden became overwhelming.
Her modest savings disappeared into medical expenses.
Her insurance did not cover everything.
The apartment she had hoped to leave to her niece was now at risk because of the mounting bills.
Grace tried to help.
She sold the few pieces of jewelry she owned. She worked extra shifts. She skipped meals and told Lily she had already eaten.
But it wasn’t enough.
Then Evelyn’s condition worsened.
Grace had spent the previous night beside her hospital bed, holding the older woman’s hand while Evelyn drifted in and out of sleep.
“Don’t waste your life worrying about me,” Evelyn had whispered.
Grace shook her head.
“You helped us when nobody else would. I’m not leaving you alone now.”
Evelyn had smiled weakly.
“You have a little girl to raise.”
“And you have nobody to take care of you.”
For a long moment, the elderly woman said nothing.
Then she squeezed Grace’s hand.
“Promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“When life finally gives you a chance, don’t let bitterness turn you into someone who forgets how to love.”
Grace had cried then.
She was still crying when she left the hospital that morning.
And she was still thinking about Evelyn when a billionaire in an expensive suit placed a black bank card in her hand.
Grace hadn’t believed it was real.
She had almost returned the card immediately.
But when she remembered Evelyn’s trembling fingers and the hospital bill she could never afford, something inside her changed.
She had not asked Brennan for money because she wanted a better life for herself.
She had asked the universe for one more chance to help someone who had saved her when she had nothing.
And now, standing outside Evelyn’s hospital room, Grace could only pray that she had made the right decision.
“Mommy?”
Lily’s voice brought her back to the present.
Grace brushed a strand of hair from her daughter’s face.
“We’re going to see what the doctors say, okay?”
Lily nodded.
Before they could enter the room, a nurse approached them.
“Are you Grace Miller?”
“Yes.”
“The billing office informed us that a substantial payment was made toward Mrs. Parker’s outstanding account this morning.”
Grace’s stomach tightened.
“Is there a problem?”
“No, not at all. I’m just letting you know that the payment has been received. The financial office will review the remaining balance and contact the authorized representative.”
Grace exhaled shakily.
“Thank you.”
The nurse gave her a kind smile.
“She’s a wonderful woman. The staff here all know her.”
Grace smiled through her tears.
“She really is.”
When the nurse walked away, Grace leaned against the wall and covered her mouth.
For the first time in weeks, she felt a little hope.
Not because the problem had disappeared.
Not because she suddenly had a home or a secure future.
But because Evelyn might finally receive the care she needed without Grace having to watch another person suffer while she stood helplessly nearby.
Lily tugged at her sleeve.
“Can we buy Mrs. Evelyn flowers?”
Grace looked down.
Flowers.
Such a small thing.
Such an ordinary thing for most people.
Yet Grace had spent months calculating every dollar, deciding which necessities could wait and which ones could not.
She had stopped buying coffee.
Stopped replacing her worn shoes.
Stopped allowing herself even the smallest comforts.
But flowers for Evelyn?
She could not bear the thought of visiting the woman who had given them shelter without bringing something beautiful.
Grace looked at Brennan’s black card in her hand.
She hesitated.
Then she made a decision.
“Yes, sweetheart. We’ll buy her flowers.”
Lily’s face brightened.
“Pink ones?”
“Pink ones.”
“And maybe yellow ones too?”
Grace laughed softly through her tears.
“Pink and yellow.”
For a few seconds, the hospital corridor felt almost warm.
Neither mother nor daughter noticed the man standing near the elevator, watching them from a distance.
He wore a dark coat and held a phone against his ear.
When Grace entered Evelyn’s room, he lowered his voice.
“She’s here,” he said.
A pause followed.
Then he added, “Yes. The woman we were looking for.”
Another pause.
His expression hardened.
“There’s something else. Someone just paid a significant portion of Evelyn Parker’s medical balance.”
He listened carefully.
Then he glanced at the hospital room door.
“No, I don’t know who made the payment.”
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“But if she has access to that kind of money, our situation may have just become more complicated.”
He ended the call and walked toward the elevator.
Before the doors closed, he sent one final message.
We need to find out who gave Grace Miller that card.
Back at Ashford Global Industries, Brennan received a message from his private investigator.
It was brief.
Preliminary public-record review of Grace Miller reveals no obvious criminal history. Her employment history includes administrative and hospitality work. Further details require additional verification.
Brennan read the message twice.
He had expected something different.
A string of unpaid luxury purchases.
A suspicious withdrawal.
A pattern of deception.
Instead, every confirmed transaction on his phone was connected to a hospital, a pharmacy, or basic necessities.
Then a new notification appeared.
Transaction approved: $47.80 — Flower shop.
Brennan stared at it.
Flowers.
After paying thousands toward a hospital bill, Grace had spent less than fifty dollars on flowers.
He leaned back in his chair.
