“You said I was your baby.”
His eyes filled, but he did not approach me.
“I loved Evelyn when we were young. She became pregnant just before I left for smokejumper training. Three months later, I received a letter in her handwriting saying she had lost the baby.”
“She never mentioned you.”
“I believed she wanted me gone.”
A woman wearing a sheriff’s badge entered before I could ask more.
“I’m Sheriff Elena Shaw. Mr. Cole called us as soon as he found you.”
She closed the door.
“Your survival is being kept confidential. The hospital has placed you under private status, and your husband has not been told where you are.”
“Grant thinks I died.”
“He reported you missing after the fire. He claimed he had driven into Bozeman for medication and returned to find the cabin burning.”
I laughed once, painfully.
“Brooke was with him.”
Sheriff Shaw pulled a chair closer.
I told her everything I had seen and heard. She recorded my statement, then asked whether Grant knew about the tunnel.
“I don’t think so. My mother never trusted him with Cedar Ridge.”
Nathan looked toward the window.
**“Apparently, she trusted him even less than you realized.”
Grant began organizing my memorial the next morning.
There was no death certificate and no recovered body. Officially, I remained missing. Grant called the service “a celebration of life” and told reporters the fire had made recovery impossible.
Sheriff Shaw believed he wanted public sympathy before petitioning Northstar’s board for temporary control.
He also contacted the insurance company, but no payment could occur without a legal finding of death.
Grant had not become rich.
Not yet.
Nathan returned to Cedar Ridge with investigators after firefighters contained the ruins. Inside the tunnel, they found a heat-resistant metal box secured behind a stone panel.
He brought it to my hospital room.
The small key was hidden inside my mother’s locket.
Within the box were company records, an amended trust, and three sealed letters. One carried my name.
My hands shook as I opened it.

My mother described Grant asking unusual questions about Cedar Ridge during the final months of her life. He wanted the original blueprints, information about the propane system, and details about the satellite alarm.
When she challenged him, he claimed he was planning renovations.
She had not believed him.
The amended trust prevented Grant from exercising my voting rights if I disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Control would temporarily pass to an independent trustee while my ownership remained intact.
Noah was named as my contingent heir.
Grant could not take Northstar simply by convincing people I was dead.
Nathan watched me read.
“Evelyn contacted me two months before she died,” he said. “She admitted the baby had survived. She said I had a daughter, but she asked me not to approach you until she explained everything herself.”
“Why didn’t she?”
“She died three weeks later.”
He had written to me repeatedly after her funeral. I had never received a single letter.
Before I could ask where they had gone, I reached the final paragraph on my mother’s first page.
One sentence had been underlined twice.
If Grant ever takes you back to Cedar Ridge, do not trust the fire.
Part 3: What the Fire Couldn’t Destroy
Grant had believed flames would erase everything.
Instead, the cabin’s technology recorded the sequence of his betrayal.
The smart-lock server showed that his phone had activated the exterior security system at 2:11 a.m., six minutes before I woke. The logs also showed repeated failed attempts from inside the house.
A trail camera recorded Grant’s SUV leaving Cedar Ridge with two people inside. The timestamp contradicted his claim that he had already been in Bozeman.
Brooke’s company card had purchased additional propane two days earlier.
None of those facts alone proved the entire plan. Together, they made Grant’s version impossible.
Northstar’s board refused his demand for immediate control after receiving the amended trust. Grant responded by telling employees I had always wanted him to succeed me.
He scheduled an emergency board vote for the afternoon following my memorial.
The insurance company froze his claim.
For the first time, Grant began making mistakes.
Sheriff Shaw received a call from Brooke on the third night after the fire. Grant had told investigators she purchased the propane for a company retreat and had visited Cedar Ridge without his knowledge.
He intended to make her the architect of the crime.
Brooke requested an attorney and offered to cooperate.
I watched her recorded interview from my hospital bed. She admitted having an affair with Grant for eleven months and knowing he wanted my insurance money.
She also admitted helping him create the false alibi.
“Did you know he planned to trap Mrs. Morgan inside the cabin?” Sheriff Shaw asked.
Brooke stared at the table.
“He said Lena would be asleep and wouldn’t feel anything.”
It was not an answer that made her innocent.
Brooke handed investigators an audio recording she had made in Grant’s car. She claimed she started recording after he threatened to blame her if anything went wrong.
