A Teacher Noticed Her 7-Year-Old Student Could Barely Walk—Then the Girl Whispered, “Dad Said It Wouldn’t Hurt”

Valerie leaned slightly closer.

“You’re safe here,” she said.

Lila swallowed.

“Am I?”

The question was barely audible.

Valerie felt something tighten in her chest.

“Yes,” she answered.

She didn’t know if she could promise that.

But she knew what Lila needed to hear.

“Yes. You’re safe here.”

Lila stared at her for several seconds.

Then she whispered,

“He said I had to be brave.”

Valerie glanced at the nurse.

The nurse’s expression had changed.

“Brave about what, sweetheart?”

Lila pulled the blanket higher.

Her chin disappeared beneath it.

“I can’t tell.”

“Why not?”

“Because Dad said if I told, people would take me away.”
