“I know I chose to help you.”

“Mom, the mortgage is due.”
“Then pay it.”
“We don’t have twelve hundred sitting around right now.”
I glanced at her handbag.
Then their SUV.

“I’m sorry to hear that.”
David shifted.
“You’re doing this to punish us.”
“No.”
“Of course you are.”
“I am doing exactly what you requested.”
Sarah shook her head.
“We asked you to stop hovering.”
“Then I stopped.”
“You don’t have to twist everything.”
“I’m not twisting anything.”
My voice stayed even.
“You said my involvement was suffocating. Money is involvement.”
David exhaled.
“This is financial manipulation.”
“I have no interest in manipulating either of you.”
I met his eyes.
“But I also will not finance people who do not want a relationship with me.”
Sarah reached toward me.
“Mom, can we just go inside?”
I stayed where I was.
“We can talk here.”
Her face fell.
That was hard.
For years, the slightest disappointment on Sarah’s face made me rush to make things easier.
I didn’t enjoy resisting that instinct.

“You think I haven’t noticed you driving over there every first of the month with grocery bags while Sarah posts brunch pictures online?”
“I don’t drive over there every first.”
“Fine. Every second.”
I shook my head.
Then Martha’s expression grew serious.
“I saw David yesterday.”
“Where?”
“Garden center near their neighborhood.”
My stomach tightened.
“He was loading a television into the SUV.”
“So?”
“Amber, the box was almost as tall as I am.”
I stared.
“He told the employee helping him that they were turning the basement into a home theater.”
I said nothing.
Martha continued carefully.
“I didn’t plan to mention it.”
“Why would you?”
“Because I didn’t want to hurt you.”
I looked toward my house.
The guest-room window with peeling trim was visible from the yard.
“They said they didn’t have twelve hundred dollars for the mortgage.”
Martha softened.
“Maybe they don’t.”
“They bought a giant television.”
“That does complicate the story.”
I removed my gloves.
“They’re not broke.”
“No.”
“They’re spending their money on what they want because they assume I’ll cover what they need.”
Martha nodded.
“That sounds closer.”
The truth embarrassed me.
Not because I had helped my daughter.
