The Lawn Guy Called While My Daughter Was “At the Airport”—Then Whispered, “Someone Is Crying Under the House”

My daughter Sarah had called that morning saying she was at the airport, about to fly to Denver, so I thought her house would be completely empty. Then the college kid mowing her lawn called less than an hour into the job and whispered, “Sir… I keep hearing somebody crying.” When he shut off the mower, I heard it too—a weak child’s cry coming from somewhere inside the house, but not upstairs. I rushed over and found a fresh grocery receipt for diapers, children’s medicine, and electrolyte drinks, plus a back door that hadn’t fully latched. Inside, a woman’s muffled voice whispered, “It’s okay, sweetheart. Mommy’s here.” Then I opened the basement door—and heard a floorboard creak from somewhere beneath us.
