My father left everything to his second wife in his will. The house. The investments…

The pension. His three children from his first marriage – my brother, my sister, and
me – got nothing.

At the reading, his wife smiled at us and said, “Your father loved you. But he loved
me more.” My brother wanted to contest.

My sister wanted to walk away. I sat there and did math in my head.

Then I asked the lawyer one question: “Was the will signed after or before the life
insurance policy was updated?”

The lawyer checked. The will was signed six months before my father’s death.

The life insurance beneficiary was changed two months before his death – back to
us. Three equal shares. His wife got the house and the pension. We got $1.4
million.
